Any relationship takes work; however a long distance relationship can be trickier. To make a long distance work, both parties need to be on the same page. You both need to have the same desire and commitment to want to stay together, regardless of what distance stands between you. This is because if one of you isn't as committed as the other, then the relationship is likely to break down. You also need trust.
So if you are entering into a long distance relationship, instead of worrying negatively about whether it will work out or not, take the positive approach and discuss how you are both going to make it succeed! Here are a just a few tips for making long distance relationships work.
Right from the beginning you both need to establish some guidelines - these must be set out and agreed on by both of you. There is no use one person dictating how the relationship is going to work, as this shows no regard for the other partners concerns. Discuss the barriers of your relationship, how often you are going to communicate, and set dates for when you are both able to visit each other. The biggest tip for making a long distance relationship successful is to communicate. This may sound obvious, but it's surprising how some people struggle to do so, and with a long distance relationship, this is even more important.
Make arrangements to text, email or phone each other on a regular basis and learn to express yourself as clearly as possible in your communication. When you can't physically see someone it can be hard to understand the emotions they are trying to convey, which can lead to misunderstandings. So you need to be honest with your words, both written and verbal, otherwise you will begin to lose trust in each other and insecurities will start to creep in - and when that happens the relationship will be in danger.
Another tip is to be imaginative! Be spontaneous and surprise your partner with a little gift every now and again. This could be a mixed tape of their or your favourite music, a book or how about having some flowers or chocolates delivered to them? You could plan a surprise visit or arrange to meet half way somewhere, or send them some movie, music or theatre tickets and surprise them at the venue! You could arrange movie nights or send each other DVDs and both watch them at the same time. Why not make them a video? Keep them up to date with what's going on in your life and surroundings or make it all about them. It doesn't matter whether you send photos, drawings, a video diary or their favourite treat or a simple postcard that says "I love you", it will remind them that even though they are not near your side, they are never far from your thoughts or heart!
Lastly, don't be afraid to talk about future plans. This may include marriage and ultimately relocation and setting up home together! By discussing your future together as a couple, you can reaffirm that all the hard work and effort you are putting into your long distance relationship will be worth it in the end!
