Facebook is the biggest social networking site today. Many of us have created an account in this website so we can connect with our friends, family and other loved ones anywhere in the world. This is a great thing because it helps us save money from making long distance calls and stuff. However, anything will always have its own sets of advantages and disadvantages. For Facebook, the general thought of connecting people is an advantage and a disadvantage at the same time.
How many times have you seen fights posted on Facebook? Quite many, if I say so myself. The site is a public site therefore many people are going to be able to see whatever it is you have posted on your profile, except if you have your page kept private. But generally, the social networking site is a very public place. True, Facebook can be helpful for those people who are apart. They could be kept updated by merely viewing the profile page of the other. Yet there are cases wherein Facebook is blamed for break ups and whatever.
Social networking sites are provided for people to have easier communication with another. Sadly though, there are people who misuse them and use them for the wrong reasons. Some would create fake accounts and pretend to be someone they really are not (or someone they wish they were). There are also those people who create multiple accounts for reasons they alone know. Although having multiple accounts in a single social networking site may be because the person has forgotten his or her password, these number of accounts will confuse people. This will therefore lead to misunderstandings and conflicts.
For those in long distance relationships, be very careful of what you place on your Facebook profile page. Not only will your posts be misinterpreted if misunderstood but this could be a reason for things to end up badly. Before you post something, think closely of what the reaction of others will be. If you want to post something as a joke, be very clear that that thing is a joke. You might say that other people should mind their own business but if you post things in a public website such as Facebook, it is the same as giving people permission to gain access to your private lives. If I were you, I would keep my profile private or be very careful of what I am posting.
So many factors can affect a long distance relationship. Facebook is now one of them. As to the question whether Facebook can bring people closer together or separate them more, it would totally depend how you use the social networking site. It all boils down to you.
